Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these medications need to be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
